New Home - Trying to go Green

July 7th, 2007 · 1 Comment · home

So I’ve finally gotten around to updating my blog.  I’m finding that having a new home entails a lot of work and time to get started.

It’s time consuming and tiring, but it’s quite rewarding putting my energies into something that’s all about us instead of benefiting someone else.   And “putting my energies” is an understatement.  It’s more like putting in all of my energies.  I don’t recall ever being so tired as I ended up during move week.

But I’m quite happy.  I own a lawnmower now….I’m like a proud father.  An electric cordless lawnmower…So I’m being green and not burning up fuel to be spit, virtually unregulated into the atmosphere.  One source quotesA conventional lawn mower pollutes as much in an hour as 40 late model cars (or as much as as much air pollution as driving a car for 100 miles).”

I have yet to have the need to mow the lawn due to a lack of rain, but I’m looking forward to it :)

Another good step up for us is a dishwasher, while I am unsure of the environmental impact of this, I do know the personal impact in terms of saving us time and frustration.  We hate doing the dishes and quite often will avoid it at all costs until we are eating off of napkins and start to feel guilty about how lazy we are.  That or we are having company and just have to clean up, whichever comes first.  To us the dishwasher is a sure sign that we’ve made it.

Continuing on the green theme I am slowly but surely replacing all of our light bulbs with energy efficient  fluorescent alternatives.  I do hope David Suzuki is proud of me, but I have yet to be able to levitate a light bulb.  He really is a magical beast.  Just stay off my front porch David…I already have a bulb out there. (I can’t find the video link, but if you’ve seen the commercial, you know what I mean)

I’m also just in the process of having a new water heater installed.  Whilst I didn’t specifically ask for high efficiency, or anything else too special, I imagine than a brand new water heater is bound to be more efficient than the 17 year old one we are having replaced.  Replaced because it started leaking about a week after we moved in…Such is the life  of a homeowner I am finding…

The rest of the plan for my green home is to look into solar powered accent lights for the garden, and adhering to our strict, but admirable waste program in Guelph, which has compost garbage, recycling, and standard waste.  All of which we must sort, and I’m happy to do so…

Anyhow…more later…I have some work to do….

I have never tested the theory but apparently a dishwasher uses a lot less water than doing the dishes by hand. So it saves energy and frustration. Double bonus. We use all energy efficient bulbs and rarely have more than a couple lights on at any one time. I have even started putting my computer to sleep at night and during the day when I am at work. We use either a new electric corded lawn mower or a reel mower which uses no power but mine. :)
Once you get into the green thing it gets kind of addictive. What can you do next to save some more energy? :)
