Pro’s
- Installation was easy and quick from the Ubuntu DVD
- All of my hardware was detected and drivers were installed with no issues.
- The default software packages give me what I need to do most of the time.
- Adding new software packages is easy most of the time using the add/remove system.
- Plug and play drivers worked nicely for my Canon digital camera right out of the box.
- Everything I normally do on my home laptop I can do with Ubuntu.
- The Terminal server client lets me remote desktop into my XP desktop as if I were using the remote desktop client on windows.
- Getting the wireless connection to connect with WPA encryption without entering passwords all the time was a bit cumbersome, but I got it working with this walk through.
- I miss the large selection of windows apps I am used to downloading when I start up a new system, but I may just need to get familiar with whatever the Ubuntu community offers.
- A few of the shortcut keys I am used to using in windows now just leave the laptop staring at me with a blank look on its face.
Con’s
Most of the cons are not a really big deal as I can work around them, and they may just be a matter of getting used to life in Linux.
Overall I notice very little difference in what I would normally do on my laptop, and I think I might just leave it as my default laptop OS. Granted, I still have dual boot set up so I can go back to windows at a moments notice. But I am extremely impressed at how easy it has been overall to make a switch to a linux desktop. I’m by no means a linux guru, but at least I have reached a milestone in having a fully function non windows system that I am happy with. It’s not about to replace my desktop system as the primary OS of choice, mostly due to my dependency on certain applications Windows offers, but its certainly much closer.
Yep, I’m an Ubuntu user, and proud of it.

It definitely takes some getting used to when making the switch from Windows to Ubuntu but I think if you just take some time to get used to it you’ll really pick things up quickly.
I spend the first month after I switched on a dual boot system, quickly realized I hadn’t reverted to Windows in weeks and just make the switch 100%. Its been two years since and I love it!
I’m glad you’re enjoying it too, welcome aboard!

Came on by via my standard G00gle blog search re “Ubuntu”. Am a little behind where you are as I am not so nerdy that I can get the thing to install as it is writ…
Good luck. Note the new Ubuntu ebook: here
By the way, I think your blog template design is one of the best I’ve ever come across.Pristine magnificence!

I am running Ubuntu in a VirtualPC atm. Did have it on an old junker a while ago but that got scrapped thus so did Linux. They have come a long way but still not far enough for me to do more than dabble. Windows guy here for a long while to come.

Glad to see you’re liking Ubuntu. I had a similar experience where I started out dual-booting and getting to know Linux. A couple months later Windows was totally gone and I haven’t done a spyware scan since. I hope everything goes well for you.

I must say I’m also impressed by the community well wishes
I can’t see my laptop windows partition lasting long . It really does everything I could want my laptop to do. My primary PC will likely remain Windows for now as I have a bit of a video game habit and so far most of the titles I like are not available. But for virtually every other application I see no real reason to run windows over Ubuntu. I also for the moment need a windows box to keep in sync with what my workplace uses, but I am looking forward to seeing what all I can get done in linux in our work environment.
Dave, I wish I could take full credit for the page design but I found it on a Wordpress templates site. I tweaked it a bit but it is mostly in tact as I found it. See the credits in my footer

Welcome to the world of Ubuntu! I’ve only been a full time user since the last two releases, but it’s been a great ride so far and I’m really enjoying having a machine that does what I want it to do and finding lots of neat and different ways to do things. For finding programs, I recommend looking around the http://ubuntuforums.org/ and https://help.ubuntu.com/community as well as just opening up Synaptic or your favorite package manager and looking through the thousands of free programs out there.
Welcome to the fun!
